The first clue that the Church might be glossing over the truth was when I read Mormon Enigma, a biography of Emma Smith. My friend Lisa, in my book club suggested it. Because at the age of 39, I was totally unaware that Joseph Smith had multiple wives, I was very disturbed. There were 37 of them. We had always been told that polygamy was necessary to populate the new Church and that there were many women who needed a means of support. Questions: 1) Only one of the women, Eliza Snow is even rumored to have been pregnant by Joseph Smith. She miscarried. So much for populating the Church. 2) Why did Joseph Smith marry already married women, who had husbands capable of supporting them? 3) The first wife, we were told, was supposed to not only be aware of subsequent wives, but approve of them. Emma not only didn't approve, but was unaware of many of them.
Maybe there are other important facts the Church hides from its members.
